Requirements for Spartiate:

  1. Level of commitment: This relates to Mind-Set and performance. By Mind-Set I mean dedication to learning how to fight in wars and melees, and dedication to traveling to and fighting in wars. Do you want to go to all of the wars and practices that you can? Can we, your team mates, count on you to make 2 out of 3 wars and practices (allowing of course for sickness, injury and work - this is a volunteer hobby, not a job!) If you think it would be fun to dedicate yourself to being the best melee/war fighter that you can, and to making our Phalanx the best unit on the field... then you would be a Professional - what the Spartan army called the Spartiates. Spartiates made up about half of the soldiers in the Spartan army.
  2. Knowledge: You must know and be able to execute the formations and maneuvers that we use.
  3. Attitude and Performance: "Spartan Attitude", effort to be the best, City before self, training your body and mind for war. And above average skill with the weapons of a hoplite. Quick, confident obedience to orders.
  4. Armor: You must have a Spartan style armor to be a Spartiate.
  5. Spartan Shield and Weapons: You must have a Spartan shield, properly painted, a boar spear (the shorter cutting spear), short sword and scabbard, and 2 javelins.
  6. Triboun: You must have a red Spartan triboun cloak (himation), for fighting and ceremony.
  7. Badge: Those who earn the rank of Spartiates will get to paint a Lambda on their shield. The Lambda was the symbol of Sparta. It looks like an upside down V.
  8. Responsibility: As a Citizen of Sparta (a Spartiate), it is your responsibility to vote on certain decisions concerning the unit. (This is a peace time responsibility, at wars we will all follow the orders we receive through the chain of command.)

Perioikoi:

  1. Level of commitment: Suppose you enjoy wars , but it is not your primary interest. You want to go to a war if it is close by, and convenient; and you enjoy one or two practices a year, but your dedication lies in another area or you simply do not have the time (or money) to attend the necessary number of events? Then in the Spartan Army you would be one of the Perioikoi, kind of a militia member, like the national guard, called out for wars in Laconia (Lacedaemon), the region around Sparta. The Perioikoi or militia made up the other half of the Spartan Army and was also very important, though they were not Citizens of Sparta.
  2. Knowledge: You need to be familiar with and be able to execute the formations and maneuvers that we use.
  3. Attitude and Performance: a cooperative attitude toward training your body and mind for war.
  4. Armor: You must have a complete set of armor, consistent with the rules.
  5. Shield and Weapons: You must have a shield, properly painted and at least a sword.
  6. Clothing: You must have a historical costume to wear at events.
  7. Badge: You must paint your unit badge on your shield.
  8. Responsibility: You must be willing to follow the lawful orders you receive through the chain of command.

Helot:

  1. Level of commitment: You are just beginning to get involved, and have not yet acquired the clothing weapons and equipment that you will need to participate fully.
  2. Knowledge: You are just starting to figure out what is going on.
  3. Attitude and Performance: a cooperative attitude toward training your body and mind for war.
  4. Armor: You do not have to have armor yet.
  5. Shield and Weapons: You do not have to have a shield and weapons yet.
  6. Clothing: You must have a historical costume to wear at events.
  7. Badge: This will not apply until you get your shield.
  8. Responsibility: You must be willing to follow the lawful orders you receive through the chain of command.
